Severe Weather in NYC?

Looks like there could be some thunderstorms in Staten Island tomorrow...there's a good amount of heating, vorticity, and moisture, plus it got up to 87 outside my house today. I will take video/pictures tomorrow if there are any developing clouds...

Tornado Touches Down In Oneida County

In a surprising event, a tornado touched down on the evening of the 17th in Camden, NY. The EF0 tornado produced little damage in the area. The warning for it can be seen here.

Hail was also reported in Cicero.

New Link and Link Edits

Getting around to finishing up the blog layout... decided to add another sounding page from the NWS for some better data coverage. I might reorganize the links a little bit, but the site is pretty good as-is for awhile.

Still waiting for those storms to get here. Looking at a damp, cool weekend, with cooler temperatures through the next week. What does all this mean? It means that I'm bored.

Outlook: Dull

Such a lag in getting the severe weather into the eastern half of NYS this year. My camcorder has been gathering dust since I got it last December... for the sole purpose of recording thunderstorms and severe weather.

Looks like the end of May might provide us with some nice storms, but that could change in an instant. Hopefully we'll get some storms within the next couple of weeks.

Until then, sit tight!

28F Low in Albany? Really?

April is over, and May is here...so why are we having a low of 28F? Last year May was wicked. The last few days I was up here during finals, we had some really nice storms. Everyone was out during the day playing sports or tanning or grilling out.

Most people, however, didn't notice the tremendous cumulonimbus clouds building larger each minute. I remember two instances in early May when the weather was severe: The day of my ATM211 final I was over playing volleyball at Empire Apartments. I noticed a cool gust of air that became sustained, darkening skies, and a balloon launched by the NWS three hours early. Sure enough, we had a raging storm that night.

A few days later, after my Physics 2 final, I was walking back to my room, noticed a wall cloud rushing in, and decided to get the hell inside. Within seconds, we had torrential rain and the lobby of the building was flooded.

...We're reaching that time of the year now, so why the hell don't we have any storms? We're certainly not gonna get it with a daytime high in the 40's and a nighttime low of 28F. We have an approaching storm system, but the instability is neglible and it will most likely be stratiform precipitation. Either way, I'm getting antsy.

Welcome To May

Got up this morning to see a low of 28F in Albany, which ties our record low set in 1961. Not the best way to start the month of May. Still no severe weather yet here this year, though there is a slight chance of thunderstorms tomorrow.

Last year, May brought a good amount of thunderstorms to the Albany area. I'm hoping for a repeat performance this year. May-June is the best time for severe thunderstorms in NYS, so here's hoping for a good season!
